City Overview

Sagres was created in 1519, through the division of the municipality of Vila do Bispo. King Sebastian was known to have spent time in the parish, listening to music along the cliffs and the sea.

Sagres, Portugal is one of the popular destinations to visit in Portugal’s Algarve region. It is renowned for its wind-buffeted fortresses, scattered along its sea-sculpted cliffs and the scenic port of Sagres town.

Now it is a major fishing port and is known for its catches of lobster and other marine delicacies.

The name Sagres derives from Sagrado (holy) owing to the important local religious practices and rituals that occurred during the pre-history of the nation.

Summertime is usually considered the best time to visit Portugal. Head to Sagres in Spring or early Autumn to take pleasure without the intense summer heat.

Beaches

Sagres has a number of great beaches in its vicinity. They are not only great spots to swim and sun-bathe but also great for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and paddle-boarding. Praia do Telheiro, Praia de Beliche, and Praia Tonel are nice to bask in the sun and swim but they are also ranked among the region’s best surfing locales.
